Tell the firm the broad issue and whether a notice, hearing or existing case is involved. You do not need to send a detailed private family history in the first WhatsApp message.
Prepare records for the meeting
Have available marriage records, agreements, notices, orders and a short chronology ready. List questions about maintenance, dower, children or other concerns. The lawyer will tell you which further records need review.
Agree confidentiality and document handling
Ask who will review the matter and how sensitive documents should be shared. Do not put children’s identity documents, intimate photographs or private records into the public information guide. An initial enquiry does not automatically mean the firm has accepted representation.
Confirm the scope and fee
Ask whether the appointment is for advice, document review or a proposed next step, and confirm the consultation charge before booking. Any later drafting or representation should have an agreed scope. Case duration and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
