Received a court notice? Prepare for your first call
A practical checklist for organising a notice, its dates and the questions to put to a lawyer.

Preserve every page, attachment and envelope or delivery record available to you. Note when and how you received it. Keep a copy you can refer to during the call; do not mark up the only original.
Read the identifying details
Write down the court or authority, case number, names of the parties and any hearing or response date printed on the document. If the wording is unclear, tell the lawyer what the document actually says rather than supplying a guessed deadline.
Prepare a short chronology
List the key events and earlier correspondence in date order. Identify any related case, previous lawyer or order. A concise account helps the lawyer ask useful follow-up questions and decide what needs closer review.
Use the call to agree the next step
Ask whether the firm can review the matter, what to bring, what the consultation costs and whether an urgent appointment is needed. A message is not confirmation of representation. Do not assume a website article has identified the deadline for your particular notice.
